300 grams of Stylecraft Special DK in White (1001) Colour 1

30 grams of Stylecraft Special DK in Colours 2 & 3

Fondant (1241) and Bluebell (1082)  

5.00mm & 4.00mm crochet hooks

5 novelty buttons in each of blue and pink, 1 animal appliqué


TENSION - 5tr and 2.5 rows measure approx 1 Inch using 4.00mm hook

Boys Cardigan (Back) - # Using colour 1 and 4.00mm hook, make 47ch, 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each ch to end. Turn. (44tr + 3ch)


Pattern Row 1 - 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * bptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 4tr, * rpt from * to * to last 2tr and 3ch to turn with, bptr around next tr, 1tr into next tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.


Pattern Row 2 - 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * fptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 4tr, * rpt from * to * to last 2tr and 3ch to turn with, fptr around next tr, 1tr into next tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.


Rpt Pattern Rows 1 & 2 until 25 rows have been worked or work measures approx 10.2 Inches from beginning. Fasten off.


Right Front - Make 23ch, 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each ch to end. Turn. (20tr + 3ch)


Row 2 - 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * bptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 4tr, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr and 3ch to turn with, bptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 2tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.


Row 3 - 3ch, 1tr into each of next 2tr, * fptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 4tr, * rpt from * to * to last 2tr and 3ch to turn with, fptr around next tr, 1tr into next tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.


Rpt Rows 2 & 3 until 21 rows have been worked. Turn.


Shape Neck - Rpt Row 2 until last 3tr and 3ch to turn with, turn leaving these stitches un-worked. (16tr + 3ch)


Next Row (Dec Row) - 3ch, tr2tog over next 2tr, 1tr into next tr, follow from * on Row 3 to end. Turn. (15tr + 3ch)


Next Row (Dec Row) - Rpt Row 2 until the last 2tr, tr2tog and 3ch to turn with, work bptr around next tr, tr2tog over next 2 stitches, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (14tr + 3ch)


Next Row - 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * fptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 4tr, * rpt from * to * to last 2tr and 3ch to turn with, fptr around next tr, 1tr into next tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. Fasten off.


Left Front - Make 23ch, 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each ch to end. Turn. (20tr + 3ch)

Next Row (Dec Row) - 3ch, rpt 3rd Row to last 4tr and 3ch to turn with, fptr around next tr, 1tr into next tr, tr2tog over next 2tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (15tr + 3ch)


Next Row (Dec Row) - 3ch, tr2tog over next 2 stitches follow from * on 2nd Row to end. Turn. (14tr + 3ch)


Next Row - 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * fptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 4tr, * rpt from * to * to last 2tr and 3ch to turn with, fptr around next tr, 1tr into next tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. Fasten off.


Sleeves x 2 - Make 29ch, 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each ch to end. Turn. (26tr + 3ch)


Next Row - (Inc Row) 3ch, 1tr into base of 3ch, 1tr into each of next 2tr, * bptr around next tr, 1tr into each 4tr, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr and 3ch to turn with, bptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 2tr, 2tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (28tr + 3ch)


Next Row - 3ch, 1tr into each of next 3tr, * fptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 4tr, * rpt from * to * to last 4tr and 3ch to with, fptr around next tr, 1tr into each of next 3tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.


Keeping continuity of pattern, (see pic) increase 1tr on next and every alternate row by working 1tr into base of 3ch and 2tr into top of 3ch at the end of the row, continue until 40tr + 3ch remain.









Work 2 rows in pattern as set without shaping until 16 rows have been worked or sleeve seam measures approx 6.5 Inches, Fasten off.


Cuff - With WS facing and using colour 2 (or colour 3 if making girls) join to cast on edge, work 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each ch to end. Turn. Work 2 more rows of dc. Fasten off. (27dc)


Using 5.00mm hook ss or over sew shoulder seams together using needle and yarn. Fold sleeves in half lengthways, place centre of sleeve to shoulder seams and ss or over sew into position. Join side and sleeve seam together in same way. Turn through to RS. #


Button/Buttonhole Bands - Working on WS of work with colour 2, start on lower edge of left hand front edge, make 1ch, work 42dc evenly into row ends along first front edge to neck, 3dc into corner, work 13dc evenly along first neck edge to shoulder, 1dc into each of next 16dc across back, 13dc evenly along second neck edge, 3dc into corner, work 42dc evenly into row ends down second front edge to corner, 3dc into corner, work 1dc into each ch along cast on edge of first front, back and second front, ss to first dc. Turn.


Buttonhole Row - Starting with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 1dc into each dc to corner, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc to next corner, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc around neck, 1dc into corner, * 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into each of next 9dc, * rpt from * to * 3 more times, 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into remaining dc, ss to first dc. Turn. (5 Buttonholes made)


Next Row - 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc and the five 2ch spaces (buttonholes) to end, working 3dc into corners. Fasten off.


Finishing - Weave in and trim off all loose ends of yarn. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Attach animal appliqué


Girls Cardigan - Rpt same as for boys cardigan from # to #


Frill - With RS facing join in colour 1 to staring ch on left hand front, make 3ch, * work 2tr into each ch across the first front, back and second front along bottom edge of cardigan to last ch, 1tr into last ch. Turn. (171tr + ch)


Next Row - 3ch, 1tr into each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Fasten off.


Button/Buttonhole Bands - Working on WS of work with colour 3, join yarn  to lower edge on frill of left hand front edge, make 1ch, work 45dc evenly into row ends along first front edge to neck, 3dc into corner, work 13dc evenly along first neck edge to shoulder, 1dc into each of next 16dc across back, 13dc evenly along second neck edge, 3dc into corner, work 45dc evenly into row ends down second front edge to corner on frill, 3dc into corner, work 1dc into each tr along frill edge of bottom of cardigan to end, ss to first dc. Turn.


Buttonhole Row - Starting with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 1dc into each dc along frill to corner, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each of next 2dc, * 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into each of next 10dc, * rpt from * to * 3 more times, 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into corner, 1dc into each dc around neck to next corner, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc to end, ss to first dc. Turn. (5 Buttonholes made)


Next Row - 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc up first front to corner, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc around neck edge to next corner, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc and the five 2ch spaces (buttonholes) to end of button band. (do not work along frilled bottom edge) Fasten off.


Flower Motif - (Worked in rounds without turning) With colour 1 make a magic circle, using 4.00mm hook work 1ch, 10dc into circle, close circle pulling loose thread, ss to first dc on beginning of row. (10dc)


Next Row - 3ch, 1tr into base of 3ch, 2tr into each dc to end, ss to top of 3ch. Fasten off. (19tr + 3ch)


Next Row - Join in colour 3 with a ss to top of 3ch, work (3ch, 3tr, 3ch, ss) into base of 3ch, * miss 1tr, work (ss, 3ch, 3tr, 3ch, ss) into next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, miss last tr, ss to first ss. Fasten off. (10 Petals)


Finishing - Weave in and trim off all loose ends of yarn. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Attach flower motif.
