50 grams of King Cole big value DK yarn in Color 1

Small amount of King Cole big value DK yarn in Color 2

OR

1.75oz of Light Worsted Weight #3 in Color 1

Small amount of Light Worsted Weight #3 in Color 2

4.00mm crochet hook

1 large button and 2 novelty buttons.

GAUGE - 4.5dc and 2.5 rows measures approx 1 Inch

Pull on Hat - (Made in rounds without turning until row12)

# With color 1, ch6 and join with a sl st to form a ring, ch3, work 13dc in ring, join with sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row.

Row 2 - ch3, 1dc in base of ch3, 2dc in each of next 13dc, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. (27dc + ch3)

Row 3 - ch3, 1dc in base of ch3, 1dc in next dc, * 2dc in next dc, 1dc in next dc, * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. (41dc + ch3)

Row 4 - ch3, 1dc in base of ch3, 1dc in each of next 2dc, * 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 2dc, * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. (55dc + ch3)

Row 5 - ch3, 1dc in base of ch3, 1dc in each of next 7dc, * 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 7dc, * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. (62dc + ch3)

Rows 6-12 - ch3, 1dc in each dc to end sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. Turn.

Brim - Working on the WS and in back loops of dc’s only, ch3, 1dc in each dc to end, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. DNT.

Next Row - Working through both loops from now on, ch3, 1dc in each dc to end, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. DNT.

Rpt last row once. DNT. Fasten off. #

Next Row - ch1, (1sc, ch3, 1sc) in base of ch1, * skip 1dc, (1sc, ch3, 1sc) in next dc, * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Fasten off.

Fold back brim onto RS of hat.

Return to loose loops at the bottom of the brim, (front loops of the back loops previously worked) with RS facing and using color 2 rejoin yarn to top of ch3 on back seam with a sl st, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each loose loop to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. DNT.

Starting with ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, work 1 more row of 1sc in each sc to end, sl st to first sc at the beginning of row. Fasten off. (62sc)

Helmet - Rpt from # to # on hat.

Next Row - Join in color 2, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each dc to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Fasten off.

Fold back brim onto helmet.

Return to loose loops at the bottom of the brim, (same as hat) with RS facing and using color 2 rejoin yarn to top of ch3 on back seam with a sl st, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each loose loop to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. DNT.

Starting with ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, work 1 more row of 1sc in each sc to end, sl st to first sc at the beginning of row. Fasten off. (62sc)

Earflaps x 2 - Counting from back seam, with RS facing and color 2 yarn, skip 12sc, rejoin yarn to next sc, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 7sc. Turn leaving 42sc un-worked. (8sc)

Next Row - ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc to end. Turn.

Rpt last row twice. Turn.

Next Row - (Dec Row) ch1, dec 1sc over first 2sc, (see abbev) 1sc in each of next 4sc, dec 1 sc over last 2sc. Turn.

Working in sc and turning at the end of each row, dec 1sc each end of next 2 rows until 2sc remain. Turn.

sl st to last sc to make a point, ch35 (ties). Fasten off.

Return to un-worked 42sc, skip 22sc, rejoin yarn to next sc, continue second earflap same as the first. Fasten off.

Button Cover - With color 2, ch6, 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each ch to end. Turn. (5sc)

Work 5 more rows in sc on these stitches, leaving a long length of yarn. Fasten off.

Thread yarn evenly all around 4 sides through the sc’s and rows, place button in center and gather around it tightly, secure so that the button cannot break free.

Finishing - Weave in and trim off any loose ends of yarn. Decorate with novelty buttons, attach covered button to crown, use chain ties to make a bow.
