Materials

30 grams of King Cole big value baby DK in cream (046) Main


Small amounts of King Cole big value baby DK in each contrast colour

OR

1.10oz of Light Worsted Weight #3 in Main Color

Small amount of Light Worsted Weight #3 in Contrast Color


5.00mm & 4.00mm crochet hooks


GAUGE - 5dc and 2 rows of dc's measures approx 1 Inch

Helmet - With 5.00mm hook ch61, sl st to first ch to form a ring, change to 4.00mm hook, making sure chain length does not twist, ch3, work 1dc in each ch to end, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. Turn. (60dc + ch3)

 

Next Row - ch3, 1dc in each dc to end, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. Turn. Rpt last row 8 more times making 10 rows in all. Turn.

 

Brim - ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each dc to last dc, 2sc in last dc, sl st to first sc. Turn. (62sc)


Next Row - Working in back loop only for this row, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, * skip 1sc, 3dc in next sc, skip 1sc, 1sc in next sc, * rpt from * to * to last sc, 3dc in last sc, sl st to first sc. Turn. Fasten off. (16, 3dc groups)


Next Row - Join contrast color yarn to centre dc on first 3dc group, ch1, sc in base of ch1, * skip 1dc, working in back loop of stitch work 3dc in next sc, skip 1dc, 1sc in centre dc of 3dc group, * rpt from * to * to last sc, 3dc in back loop of last sc, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn. Fasten off.


Working in back loop of all sc's from now on rejoin main color yarn to first sc, ch3, 2dc in base of ch3, * skip 1dc, 1sc in centre dc of 3dc group, skip 1dc, 3dc in

next sc, * rpt from * to * to last 3dc group, skip 1dc, 1sc in centre dc of 3dc group, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. Turn. Fasten off.


Using contrast and main color alternately, rpt last row twice more, making 5 rows in all. Fasten off.


Fold brim back onto front of helmet, centre the slip stitched seam (start & end of row) to back.

 

Earflaps x 2 - With RS facing, working in loose loops under the brim, counting from the slip stitched seam at the back of the helmet, skip 8sc, rejoin main color yarn to next sc, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in next 7sc. Turn.

 

Next Row - ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc to end. Turn. Rpt last row twice. Turn.

 

Next Row - (Dec) ch1, dec 1sc over first 2sc, (see abbrev) 1sc each sc to last 2sc, dec 1sc over last 2sc. Turn.


Rpt last row twice or until 2sc remain. Turn. sl st last 2sc together to make a point, ch51, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each ch to end, sl st to earflap. Fasten off.


Skip 30sc, rejoin main color yarn to next sc, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 7sc, turn leaving 8sc un-worked. Continue same as for first earflap.

Fasten off.


Using main and contrast color mixed make 1 medium sized and 2 small

pom-pom's, I used a Clover Pom-Pom maker.


Finishing - Gather at crown and sew securely, attach medium pom-pom over gathered top at crown and 1 small pom-pom to each end of chain ties, sew in

and tie off loose ends of yarn, make a bow with chain ties.
